Question:

In
Ireland from the 18th of May to the 25th of July every year, the 'Shafaq e
Ahmar' Reddish glow does not disappear after Maghrib, however with the passage
of time the darkness does increase.

How does one calculate the Esha time in this instance, according to the Hanafi
Madh'hab?

Answer:

From the nature of your question we understand that the redness (referred to as the Shafaq-e-Ahmar) remains continuously, although the darkness does increase as it gets later, hence the confusion in regards to the Esha time.

In this case, the time of Esha should be estimated and Salaah performed. For example, if Esha time normally sets in 1 hour and 15 min to 1 hour 30 min after Maghrib, then on such days where the redness doesn’t disappear, Esha may be performed after 1 hour 30 min. However, due to uncertainty in regards to the accurate time of Esha (as a result of the above dilemma), it will be advisable that Esha is delayed by an additional 5-10 min so that one may be at ease that the time of Esha has entered with certainty.

You may also discuss the matter with your local Ulema as we are certain they have already resolved this issue in the past. If they have already calculated a particular time for the Esha Salaah on these particular days, then such calculations may be accepted and followed. We have been informed by some Ulema that according to their research, the time of Esha sets in approximately one hour after sunset and this is generally acted upon. That is the information that has reached us, but you should verify it with your local Ulema.
