Question:

Q1. In the masjid in
our locality we get a maximum of about 150 musallees +/ - besides jummah.
Recently a sound system was introduced in the masjid which has a facility for
sound effects like echo.

When the imaam leads the salaah 2 microphones are used. One which is known as a
lapel microphone that clips onto the imaams clothes and does not produce any
sound effects. It is used only for the takbeers and salaam in salaah. It could
be used for qiraat as well. The second one is known as a dynamic microphone which
is on a stand to the side of the imaam. This microphone produces the sound
effects and is used only for the qiraat.

In order to obtain the desired sound effects when the qiraat is recited two
things are necessary:

a) The qiraat mic has to be very close to the imaams mouth because of which the
imaam has to move to the side away from the mic when going into ruku.

b) The volume has to be kept at a certain level below which the desired sound
effects will not be obtained. At the current level a number of musallees have
found it to be too loud and disturbing.

In view of the above kindly respond to the following questions.

1. Is it permissible to use sound effects for the qiraat in salaah?

2. Is it okay for the imam to move away from the microphone or sway the body in
order to go into ruku and when coming up from sajdah into qiyaam?

3. Is it okay for the volume to be so high whereby some musallees find it
disturbing?

4. Is it okay to use the microphone for zuhr and asr salaah when there are only
about 70 to 80 musallees?

Answer:

1. The Object of the microphone is so that the Muqtadis are able to hear their Imaam, the volume should be adjusted accordingly and not beyond that. There is no need to modify or amplify the sound just so that the recitation sounds more enjoyable as this is not the objective of the microphone, rather it is to convey the voice of the Imaam. The Microphone should be used according to necessity and not with the intention of entertainment, therefore the “echo” mode and other similar sound effects should not be utilized. (Contemporary Fataawa Pg. 33 - Mufti Taqi Saheb)
2. Salaah is a very noble and virtuous Ibaadah. It is the time when a servant is subjugating himself in front of his Master and Creator. Such a noble Ibaadah should be carried out with the utmost respect and nobility. All such movements and actions which are deemed as superfluous, such as “swaying”, should be absent from such a noble Ibaadah. Due to the placement of the mic the Imam is unable to proceed to Ruku or Sajda from Qiyaam (the standing position) or return to Qiyaam from Ruku or Sajda as one would normally do so. Rather, the Imam would have to move/sway to the left or right, as to avoid hitting the mic, which could cause him to move his face away from Qibla. This would be regarded by the Fuqaha as “Iltifaat bi wajhihi”. Iltifaat bi wajhihi done without necessity would be considered Makrooh e Tahrimi. ((Al-Bahr al-Raa'iq Vol. 2 Pg. 23). The lack of necessity in this case can be seen from the fact that there are many other mics available which would not hinder the movements of the Imam in Salaah. It should also be noted that in an extreme case where the Imam moves his chest away from Qibla, which is termed as “Tahweelu sadr”, for the duration of one Rukn will cause the Salaah to be nullified. (Raddul Muhtaar Vol. 1 Pg. 643). One should remember that although the Salaah will be valid if “Iltifaat bi wajhihi” and “Tahweelu sadr” does not take place, the Muntadimeen (people in charge) should change the mic so the mic does not hinder the normal movements of the Imaam in Salaah.
3. If the Imams Qira’at can be heard clearly by all the Musallis, then it is inappropriate for the Imam to recite in a louder tone especially when it causes inconvenience to the Musallis. The same rule will apply to setting the volume of the Speaker system. It should be set to such a level that enables the Musallis to listen to their Imaam without disturbing them due to being too loud.
Special consideration should be given to the elderly who are sometimes inconvenienced due to the speakers being too loud. (Raddul Muhtaar Vol. 1 Pg. 564)
4. It should be understood that the Imaam is required to raise his voice in Salaah to the extent of his congregation whereby the persons standing in the last row (Saff) of the Salaah should be able to adequately hear his voice without any form of uncertainty or doubt left in their minds particularly with regard to the change and transmission from one posture to another. If this can easily be achieved without the use of a microphone then the use of a microphone in such an instance is unwarranted and unnecessary. (Contemporary Fataawa Pg. 33 Mufti Taqi Saheb)
